I spent the day just hanging out with my brother. It was nice in a strange and light sort of way. It was like reliving a favorite dream. I found myself staring at him for no reason, trying to memorize the lines on his face, the shape of his jaw, or the muscles along his back. I guess on some level I was afraid that if we should ever get separated again, I’d forget what he looked like. I didn’t want that to happen. So I watched him, nearly all day. I watched as he worked with those horses, and I could tell by that alone how compassionate his soul was.

“The vague things I’m starting to remember about my mother,” I said to him, “I can see through you. She was caring like you are. I can feel her more than I can remember her, but I can tell you are a lot like her.”

I knew it’d be a while before he’d believe that for himself, but at least he was starting to imagine the possibility that it might be true. When the rain lifted, he opened the barn doors up. He put the most spirited horse outside first to let him run, and believe me, that horse did run. We stood together beside the paddock under a leaning tree that was still dripping a bit. We stood together on a mound of moss like carpet, just watching. That big black horse stretched out with every stride, blowing puffs of steam with each breath that rolled over his back. He looked like a locomotive, and I quickly understood why Native Americans named them “Iron Horses” back in the day. The energy coming off his muscles evaporated into the gray left behind him. Clods of sod flung off the back of his hooves as he was making time across the broad field. My eyes could barely absorb the beauty of that black horse moving across grasses so green they seemed to be sprouting on top of another sun. Then there was the sea, the distance and wonder made me breathless. And the gray stone everywhere comforted me; it was timeless and beautiful in its own right. More than once my eyes started weeping, almost on their own. I had finally found my home.

“He’s still alive, isn’t he?” I don’t know why I said that, but I did.

“Yeah. And I don’t mean to tell you your business. It’s just,” he hesitated.

“That’s okay. I trust you. I always have.”

“I think the next time you see him should be at his funeral, if then. Let him die alone.”

I could see the concern in his eyes for my sake, but I hadn’t even thought about confronting our father yet, so I didn’t reply to him, and the horse took another turn around the perimeter. He was clear down by the ancient water wall.

“No one ever caught him or punished him, then?”

“They did not,” Drew said in a tone that was complicated with layers of regret twisted around responsibility.
